Masterplan Model of Tripoli Waterfront for Foster + Partners

masterplan model

The huge masterplan model is constructed from striking illuminated blocks, but the offsite detail, ocean and surrounding areas of the 1: 1250 model are represented by a huge aerial photograph incorporated into the baseboard. The Tripoli model is one of the more striking masterplan models we have made, in part due to its size and unique baseboard. Typically we would use hand-finished hardwood blocks and veneering techniques to represent the offsite features, since wood has a good natural finish after being taken to a certain grade of sandpaper and requires no further treatment. It also provides a good contrast to the central scheme, which may be representing in more contemporary materials and methods such as 3D printing, polished acrylic or metals such as brass and aluminium. A masterplan model need not be huge. While big models have an undeniable impact, small models can be just as communicative and have an…

MASTIFF Protected Vehicle

Amalgam BMT Mastiff

Client: BMT Defence Services This full-detail model of the MASTIFF for BMT Defence Services includes detail down to rivets and shutlines on small electrical components. Models with this level of detail are rare, since most are illustrative and do not require a literal approach. No CAD or technical drawings were provided for this model, other than a hobbyists' kit from which to pull approximate dimensions. All the CAD was built up from scratch in 2D and 3D design programs; the multi-faceted bonnet and chassis presented a particular challenge, due to their oblique angles and meeting points. The model includes a flocked and textured base, cast rubber wheels and a speckled paintjob on the soldier's clothing to achieve a camoflage pattern.

Domestic Microgeneration Models

Energy Display Model

Client: EDF Following on from the success of the L.E.D. Energy House, EDF commissioned us to make three smaller, stripped-down demonstration houses for transportation around the country. These models were designed to be simpler and more illustrative featuring polycarbonate cases which doubled as walls and ceilings. While the chasing L.E.D.s on the larger models were set in channels behind tinted acrylic, in these models they were set behind white acrylic, making them invisible when switched off and diffusing through the plastic when switched on. These compact and portable displays proved highly successful and before long we had produced a total of nine models for EDF stationed at various points around the country.
